As
you might have heard, there is quite a selection of people throwing their
hat into the ring for a chance to become the Democratic Party’s choice to run
for president in 2020. One of the thoughts among pundits was that the
moment Bernie Sanders entered the race, the very popular Rep. Alexandria
Ocasio-Cortez would quickly endorse his candidacy. Sen. Sanders was in
Brooklyn, New York, this past weekend, kicking off his campaign
with a set of rallies. Spectrum News NY1 spoke with
2016 Sanders supporter Rep. Ocasio-Cortez about the campaign kickoff and who
she was planning on endorsing.
Rep.
Ocasio-Cortez: We’ve been in active conversation. I’ve been speaking with him
and several other of the 2020 candidates, and I think that they have really
understood and respected the fact that I think that I want to wait until we get
a little bit closer. I think we need to have a conversation as a party, and I
think that endorsing very earlier in this race prevents us from having that
kind of conversation. People will say, ‘Oh, she’s just supporting so-and-so,
that’s why she’s saying that.’ And I think it’s, you know, we have to have real
conversations about income inequality, about criminal justice, about
immigration, about the environment.
It’s always good to remind us all that we are still in
the middle of a big conversation, with many voices and opinions on what
