Jefferson County, MO health board, protesters oppose mask mandate despite the rising death toll

By SJ Otto
When I see or read from people who refuse to wear masks I am amazed that people in this country can be so selfish and uncaring about other people. According to 5 On Your Side, a local TV station:

HILLSBORO, Mo. — The Jefferson County Health Department’s board of trustees pushed a vote on a possible mask mandate to next week following a heated debate inside the meeting and outside the building Tuesday.
On the same day Missouri hit a single-day record of new coronavirus cases, Jefferson County Health Department Director Kelley Vollmar suggested the board require masks as one strategy to limit the spread.”

Some of the reasons for opposing the mask mandate totally amazed me. For example:

"I'm not responsible for anybody's health, safety or well-being but my own, so I'm not wearing a mask,” Keith Fisher said.

This guy is so selfish he is willing to let other people die rather than put up with inconvenience of having to wear a mask. I have rarely seen such a selfish, self centered, personal greed as with him. He seems to have plenty of friends who share that kind of selfishness. These are the kind of ass holes that have stopped this country from having a national health care system. This is the only country in the industrialized world that doesn’t have a national health cares system. It is just about the only industrialized country that refuses to see health care as a human right. Our leaders, here in the US, bitch and bitch about human rights violations in Cuba and yet Cuba, a very poor country, provides health care for all its citizens, regardless of their ability to pay. Yet the US, the wealthiest country in the world, neglects the health care of its poorer citizens.
Day after day, the numbers of people getting this virus rises dramatically. So does the number of people dying from it. For a long time it seemed that only older people and those with certain health problems were likely to die from this virus. But lately most of the people getting this disease are younger folks. And younger folks with few noticeable health problems are dying from the coronavirus.
Just recently there have been young people who actually thought the coronavirus is a hoax. But some have found out the hard way that it is not. For example, from The New York Times:

“A 30-year-old man who believed the coronavirus was a hoax and attended a “Covid party” died after being infected with the virus, according to the chief medical officer at a Texas hospital.
The official, Dr. Jane Appleby of Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, said the man died after deliberately attending a gathering with an infected person to test whether the coronavirus was real.
In her statements to news organizations, Dr. Appleby said the man had told his nurse that he attended a Covid party. Just before he died, she said the patient told his nurse: “I think I made a mistake. I thought this was a hoax, but it’s not.”

This is the other half of the equation, people who just don’t seem to believe this disease is real. While such people are contributing to the spread of this virus, at least they are not deliberately being cold hearted against their fellow human beings.
I posted this article on my Facebook page and I got some interesting comments, so I decided to use them. Some interesting points were made, including the idea that these are often the kinds of people who are so religiously against abortion. Life is sacred before birth—not so sacred afterwards. So here are the comments:

I've got $100 saying they are prolife. Any takers?

Pro-life, pro-war and anti-masks ...

That's just south of St. Louis county. Anti maskers a a death cult. If they were just endangering themselves I would say "go for it assholes", but they aren't.

"I'm not responsible for anybody's health but my own."
"So a pregnant woman should be allowed an abortion to save her life?"…
“No.”
